After moving from Nigeria to the United States at the age of 19 to go to University, Adichie learns about the different stereotypes toward Africans as she interacts with her American roommate. Consequently, Adichie reflects on the danger of a single story.

Growing up, Adichie was constantly reminded by her mother of how poor her family’s house boy, Fide, was whenever she wasted any food. This led her to view Fide’s family as poor, and only poor. However, when she finally visits Fide’s village, her view begins shifting to a more well-rounded one.
Mexico: A Country of Illegal Immigrants?
After Adichie finishes her college education and continues to live in the United States, she decides to travel to the city of Guadalajara in Mexico. Having seen a lot of media coverage on TV about how Mexicans try to enter the United States illegally, it surprises Adichie when she visits a local market and encounters a different reality to what she expected.
